May 8, 2008: Kudos to Daniel Henninger

Best short paragraph of the week (or month or maybe more):

"The superdelegates are faced with choosing between the Clinton machine's brutal demographic math and thinking well of themselves. No contest."

He has interesting things to say about the Obama-McCain battle as well.

If, as seems inevitable unless someone comes up with a compromising photo of him with a goat or a small child, Obama maintains his lead in delegates and popular vote the SDs have no choice- unless they want to destroy the Democratic party.

I was laughing too hard when I read him comparing Pantsuit to the Terminator's crawling hand to make it to the quoted snippet.

Interesting that Henninger compares Obama's upcoming general election campaign to JFK's in its rhetorical appeal; it's worth noting in that regard that JFK, for all his flash and charisma, barely beat Nixon and needed a bag of tricks to manage even that. And he was running against Nixon, who, IIRC, had all the charisma of a soggy piece of toast.

My point? I don't buy into Obama's inevitability when it comes to the general. McCain can take him with a smart campaign.

thinking well of yourself - Ok.... but at what cost?

Obama's paradise so far is based on the premise that voting for him will redeem us, as if voting for someone because they are black, or looking backward, will somehow move us forward.
If memory serves in order for redemption to be 'real' there is a sacrifice that must be made. What exactly are we going to sacrifice is not immediately clear. Interesting that Obama mentions JFK, who is I would suspect best known for the tragedy we met.

From a NYT Science article about research on learning.

Dr. Kawecki suspects that each species evolves until it reaches an equilibrium between the costs and benefits of learning. His experiments demonstrate that flies have the genetic potential to become significantly smarter in the wild. But only under his lab conditions does evolution actually move in that direction. In nature, any improvement in learning would cost too much.

I hate to sound like a doubting Thomas but so far Obama's postracial gospel is thin on substance. We will know more after further results from the lab... I mean the election ;)

I am not sure how Daniel Henninger gathers up his insights into the opposition, but he does a helluva job of it. At this point he is the most astute political observer we have. I hope Sen. McCain's people are reading/talking to him.
