February 27, 2008: Al Dura.... Skyping Paris

I was up early this morning to help with PJM's ongoing coverage of the Al Dura Trial in Paris. We seem to be almost alone in the US media bothering with this trial, yet it has arguably tremendous historical significance. The photo of the supposedly-dead Palestinian boy Mohammed al Dura, "murdered" by Israeli troops, went round the world and helped instigate Intifada II (which in turn helped instigate a lot of things, including the Iraq War). If this video and ensuing photo proves to be a forgery, many things must be reexamined, although I doubt they will be. People cling to their views like a two-year olds' security blanket.

Nevertheless, that's why I was on Skype this morning with Richard Landes, using the reliable Call Recorder software to record our conversation for a podcast you can hear here. Skype is a marvelous invention, when it works. And it works more often than not these days.

Will we be hearing from Nidra Poller on this latest episode? Her earlier coverage was always vivid and informative.

It's probably too much to hope that the MSM will pay any attention to this matter, since they've ignored it to now. But I hope, at least, that Karsenty -- and Enderlin -- will get the justice they deserve.

The al-Dura incident did not really instigate the "Aqsa Intifada," however it did help fuel it.
Israel's then-Ambassador to the UN, Yehuda Lancry, wrote in a letter to Kofi Annan that attacks on Israel had been increasing for weeks before the so-called Intifada started:
The events in these areas represent the latest and most severe developments in a wave of violence that has been building over the past few weeks. The attacks began with the throwing of stones and Molotov cocktails in the vicinity of the Netzarim Junction on 13 September. This was followed by the killing of an Israeli soldier by a roadside bomb on 27 September, and the murder of an Israeli police officer by a Palestinian policeman in a joint patrol on 29 September.

If this was indeed a manufactured atrocity it should be exposed and rejected at least as much (if not more) as the possible Clemens perjury in this country.
I see the congress, to their credit, referred it to justice today.

Speaking of C-SPAN, I expect wall to wall Buckley this weekend. It should be a treat.

He will be missed :(
