September 11, 2007: Has Sandy Berger got Hillary in his pants?
I was stunned to read on the Volokh Conspiracy that Hillary Clinton has Sandy "Pants" Berger as one of her foreign policy advisers. Not only does that show "poor judgment," as Jonathan Adler writes on Volokh, it demonstrates a kind of contempt for the law and the truth (areas where Berger has shown himself to be dodgy, to say the least) that is quite disturbing. This is far worse than the Norman Hsu affair, which was bad enough. Hsu represents the standard form political corruption with which we are all, alas, familiar (unless it turns out he was an agent of the Chinese government). But Berger walked off with significant National Security documents from the National Archives?! It boggles the mind that Hillary would use him as an adviser - unless he has something on her... in which case... we're in for a helluva ride.

Hillary: Sandy, are those classified documents in your pants?
Sandy: No, ma'm. I'm just glad to see you.
Roger, the Hildebeest knows full well that the MSM will completely ignore her current association with Mr. Berger. She has nothing to worry about. Anyone expressing reservations will be characterized as part of the vast right-wing conspiracy.
"Roger, the Hildebeest knows full well that the MSM will completely ignore her current association with Mr. Berger."
Amen. Hillary Clinton is well aware that the MSM is unofficially part of her campaign. They will do whatever it takes to protect her.
I was also somewhat stunned that Glenn Reynolds is surprised by Hillary's selection of Sandy Berger. Don't people know that both Senators Clinton and Barack Obama think highly of Saul Alinsky? Deep in their guts, both of these major Democratic Party presidential candidates are radicals to the core.
When a campaign has on board the likes of Harold Ickes, Terry McAuliffe, Sandy Berger, it is clear that Hillary relies on the bandits of the past. More grist for the conservative outrage. More traction for the Fox News Channel and other outlets to characterize her as the fraud she is. A leopard does not change stripes. It is precisely this image of a questionable character that will energize the base against her and compel the soccer moms [or whichever metaphorical voters exists in 2008] to park the van, leave the kids at Momma's and go to vote against her. A more formidable candidate would cast aside such frauds and reinvent herself.
The mere fact that Berger knows the content and significance of the documents he stole gives him all the leverage he needs. It must be something really embarrassing to the Clintons to be worth such a serious felony. If he leaked it at the right moment, he could blow her campaign out of the water.
As for the MSM, if they cover the forthcoming election in the expected highly partisan manner, how much harm will they do themselves? (and I don't just mean in the eyes of politics-obsessed bloggers, but among the wider American public)
The Journal this AM contines the Hsu story disclosing the source of Hsu's money, one Joel Rosenman of Woodstock fame. Scammed for $ 40 million, Joel has no reason to clam up since he has investors in his fund and a fiduciary responsibility to recover his money. He has even gone so far as to talk with the Manhattan DA. In a political sense what this means is the Journal will continue to unleash this bombshells on Hillary sending her campaign on the defensive. Wolfson and his ilk can not go on attack mode since there is really nothing to attack - suffice to say, "we gave back the money. Not our business!!"
Hillary should be pummeled by the press for her refusal to disclose the 250 + bundled givers. She recently voted for their disclosure but now hangs tough refusing disclosure. This is stuff the TV media can not ignore. CNN was running stories yesterday on it. So maybe this stories has more than legs in light of the WSJ stories. Hurrah for the Journal. And for once hurrah for the press.
"Roger, the Hildebeest knows full well that the MSM will completely ignore her current association with Mr. Berger."
This is exactly what happened during the 2006 campaign. The Sandy Berger scandal was virtually ignored by the MSM. There is little doubt, however, but had he been George W. Bush's advisor---the president would have not been reelected. No, Hillary Clinton is not greatly worried. She knows that the leftist dominated media are her unofficial allies. Moreover, we should be very concerned when they start comparing Senator Clinton to Golda Meir and Margaret Thatcher. We can indeed take it for granted that she will be marketed as a "strong woman who is able to face down our enemies. Hillary is another warrior queen!"
As if Berger has so much foreign policy expertise that Hillary must have him on her staff. What, is he especially quick at googling "where is Tbilisi?" or something?
No, my bet is that he has something on the Clintons, and he must be handled because he's way too visible to be hanging out in Fort Marcy Park.
I doubt that Sandy Berger's relationship with Hillary is based on his ability 'expose' her by revealing some shocking secret or other. She'd have to worry about backstabbing on a daily basis. Keep your friends close, and enemies closer? I rather think not, here.
Rather, he's one of the very faithful servants that she and Bill have long cultivated and supported in return for... whatever rewards they get. Otherwise, why'd he have risked the adventure of looting the National Archives to prevent the 9/11 Commission from turning up facts embarrassing to the Clinton Administration? His ludicrously light treatment by the Justice Department (now, THERE'S a superb reason to send Mr. Gonzales down the road) could be considered a happy accident from his point of view. Perhaps, like in all Federal institutions, he had allies buried in the system and could hope somehow to be shielded (as he may have been) - but it wouldn't have taken more than one determined counter-ally from the Other Party to blow that up, and he couldn't know for sure that such didn't exist.
I don't know that Hillary is all that politically smart.
She is the one that chose for Bill to fight the Paula Jones suit that ended up getting bubba impeached.
Remember the Rose Law firm missing billing records.
She fired the white house travel office people.
She hired a former bouncer from little rock that illegally sifted thru some 700 FBI background files of former republicans including former Bush officials Marlin Fitzwater, James Baker and Brent Scowcroft.
White Water, Charlie Trie.
Oh – and she tried to socialize the best healthcare in the world.
A commercial on Hillary would pretty much write itself. Once people are reminded they will not choose to go back.
Sandy Berger is always somewhere inexplicable in the lives of the Clintons: He was National Security Advisor with the qualifications of being a frikkin' trade attorney!!!
Regarding Chillery: Her "great campaigner" husband never received 50% of the popular vote in the Presidential elections, even against Bob Dole. Does anybody think she'll be more preferable than he was?
