December 18, 2006: My review of "The Lives of Others"...

... is over on Pajamas. As you will see, I liked it. A lot. A very lot. My only regret is that it will take so long to reach the American public (Feb. 9). This is one for your permanent DVD collection.

Back in the 20s, Berlin was at least the equal of Hollywood when it came to all facets of film making. But long before Hitler and more when he took over there was a rush of Germans to Hollywood. There were so many native Germans that the term "M O S" which means a shot that is silent, or with the recording devices turned off, became the standard word for a silent take. But why M-O-S? What the hell is that? It stands for "Mitt Oudt Sount" which is what the native Germans said for "without sound." Anyway, the Germans still can do it from time to time Fassbinder (worse--or better--than von Stroheim) for the fifteen hour super movie, Berlin Alexanderplatz, Petersen when he did Das Boot, Agnieszka Holland, and so on. But German movies don't penetrate much beyond their borders now. This sounds like another German movie that is great and will be a box office zero.
