Sen. Joseph Lieberman's oped in the WaPo today is worth reading as an exercise in statesmanship. Interesting too are the words he uses to describe himself at the bottom of the piece:
The writer is an Independent Democratic senator from Connecticut.
Bravo.

Sending more troops will be as unpalatable as the Nixon pardon.
But in the long term, same as the pardon, sending the troops will turn out to the right call.
JL explained it this way to Tim Russert, according to Nicole Stockdale at the Dallas Morning News:
MR. RUSSERT: So you'll be Senator Joe Lieberman, I/D, Connecticut.
SEN. LIEBERMAN: Yeah, we checked with history and actually in the late 70s Senator Harry Byrd of Virginia listed himself as an Independent Democrat. You got to go back to the mid-19th century to find the last Independent Democrat.
