June 29, 2005: Profiles in Cowardice - A New Series
Considering the story was buried in typical NYT fashion on page 15, Senator Ron Weyden, D-Oregon, or his minions, must have been pretty panicked to insist on the following correction to the paper's "Senators Laud Treatment of Detainees in Guantanamo":
An article on Tuesday about the treatment of detainees at Guantanamo Bay paraphrased incorrectly from a comment by Senator Ron Wyden, Democrat of Oregon, one of several senators who inspected the military detention facility during a weekend trip. He said he felt good about the work of three American guards he met there. He did not say he was pleased with the overall handling of the detainees.
Heaven forbid! He would be the disgrace of every Starbucks from Portland to Eugene!

This continues the Democratic tactic of claiming to support "the troops" while simultaneously denouncing "the military." Linda Foley tried to make that distinction a few weeks back, too.
Evidently Ron was upset there weren't enough ecologically friendly drinking cups and hypoallergenic soaps for the prisoners to use after working out on their Cybex machines and Stairmasters.
Plus, there's apparently only one masseur for the whole camp. And facials are only available on Thursdays. The horror!
We should take pity on the Democrats. They are twisting their minds into contortions trying to remain relevant and keep what vestiges of power they still have...
On second thought, since the only power they seem to have left is to obstruct and undermine, take no prisoners and make sure to ridicule at every opportunity.
Sadly, some day we will need a responsible opposition and they will be nowhere in sight.
poor baby tewwowists...were those mean National Guards people from New Jersey rude to you? Just cause you promised to dismember their children is no reason for them to touch your Koran without gloves on. poor baby tewwowists.
Maybe tomorrow Sen. Weyden will re-correct back to his original--or would the original be the pre-visit?--position. Or is the post-visit, but pre-correction #1 (or, depending, correction #2), the correct "original" position? If not, then tomorrow's correction would be a re-re-correction, of course. Or perhaps if so, I'm not sure, I have a headache. I mean, I'm sure I have a headache, but not sure about that other thing I was talking about before. Before the headache. Well, not "before the headache" (I had it before I mentioned it), but before I mentioned the headache.
The article says that Dem Sens Wyden and Nelson were in Cuba "primarily to discuss new agricultural trade" with Castro's Cuba. Only afterwards did they manage to mosey on over to Gitmo where they "ran into" the Republican Sens who were visiting expressly to see Guantanamo. Looks like Dems care so much about what a party leader and other Dems allege to be wretched and inhumane conditions there, that seeing for themselves is just fine, as long as they're going to be in Cuba, anyway.
Accusations and condemnation- from the Senate floor. First-hand inspection and backtracking- a sidetrip and buried article.
Dymphna, your post on Gates of Vienna is chilling as hell on this morning's news that the Iran Hostages are saying that the new Iranian President is one of the Teheran ringleaders of the '79 hostage crisis.
Brow seems different--but, age, &/or lighting could account for that. Body type--shortish, wiry (I've seen the current dude on TV) are the same, as is the head 'hold'--the neck length and angle. If it's the same guy who had the gambling impulsivity to pull off the hostage crime, he's a Terrorist with a capital "T" and willing to go all the way. Thank goodness we've been shipping a few KC-135s and Bunker-Busters to Israel. Batten down the hatches.
“Sadly, some day we will need a responsible opposition and they will be nowhere in sight.”
Some day? Whatabout today? We always need a responsible opposition. I usually agree with the Republicans, but I still feel uncomfortable that they are now essentially the only game in town. The Democrats are losers possessing no good ideas of their own. Obstructionism is seemingly their only goal. Where is Joe Lieberman? Has he wimped out? The Democrats apparently have no leaders willing to tell the crazies to go to hell.
Just out of curiosity, did the gallant Senator actually say WHAT he didn't approve of that he "inspected?"
Of course not. After 500 more visits with Fidel and sidetrip inspections of three guards per, then the good Senator will be able to give us a complete report and his (hedged) verdict.
Let me get this straight. Dymphna and the Baron B. are married, Shrinkwrapped and the Baron both post here and are also the first two [last look, only] commenters on the Gates of Vienna post.
SAT question: Are Shrinkwrapped and Dymphna related, and if so, how?
Buddy, do you know the whole quote (old blues song)? Approximately:
Gonna buy me a bulldog, watch my old lady whilst I sleep
Gonna buy me a bulldog, watch my old lady whilst I sleep
Cause women today are so crooked, she just might make that four-day creep
Can't watch your wife, and watch your outside women too
Can't watch your wife, and watch your outside women too
While you're out with your woman, she's at home, washin your clothes, cookin your food, doin you dirt -- Buddy, who you try to fool?
Baron: I'll buy Dymphna's denial. (Based on her blogger profile pic, she's clearly saintly.)
What I'm not convinced about is the "Iranian: then and now" photos. But a fair number of the former hostages seem pretty certain.
As far as Israel taking pre-emptive action goes, that's about as tough a decision as a leader can face. It would be much better to have a more sh_t-scared Europe on the side-lines when and if it happens (it won't stop the public condemnations, but the real internal response will be relief),...but how long to wait until they are sufficiently terrified? tick..tick..tick.
"You can lose your money, pray God don't lose your mind
You can lose your money, pray God don't lose your mind
But if you lose your woman, please don't mess with mine"
Ahh...Disreali Gears...I can picture the album cover right now, laying there on the cardboard-box coffee-table, covered with candle-droppings, roach clips, burnt matches, scholastic-probation notices....
And I left out the water pipe made out of a Skippy jar, the Whippets, tins of snuff, and the Whole Earth Catalog. Black-light poster of Che in the background.
Canned Heat and a little Hendrix fellas? Make sure you keep the barbs and the Jackson Browne under seperate lock and key as they are far too dangerous to mix.
"He had on penny loafers and ah purple bellbottoms, and he had a huge protest button on that said, "God is Acid", boy that piiiiissed me oooffff. Ah anyway I screeched a halt an I yelled out the window and I said ah "Hey... what you doing in my town buddy, that son-of-a-%#*!% was ignoring my existence, boy I hate that. So I leaped out of my ol' Corvette and I, I trotted over and I proceeded to kick A@@ on the god%^*& son-of-a-%#*!%in' morfidite, now I walked on his face and %#@! it was more fun than squashing tadpoles"
"I, Johnathan Abner Tobias Pissoff, in the presence of the universal god of salvation, do solemnly affirm that I've been chosen.... I further affirm, that although I'm decent god fearing man with family and property. Argh, I want to kill, rape, ravage, plunder, pillage, stomp, devour, destroy, hack, smash, flash, flish and bash, all queers, commies, shinnies hallies and hoonkies, all greaseballs, lockies, polacks, lepers and wetbacks, all bohunks, eggheads, fudgesicles and highslants, all poets, migs, frogs, queers, pipsqueaks, cajants, dwarfs, dipshits and teenage loose women. In the name of Jesus Christ this I do affirm"
"The Illiad" by Ed Sanders (BMI-Heavy Metal Music) from the album "Sanders' Truckstop"
Classic music for expanded minds, you won't hear this immersed in the corporate greed of exposed bouncing cleavage squeaking out "Opps, I did it again"
As our grandparents used to tell us of "the good ol' days"
Found this blog trying to find the lyrics to this song which I've had for over 30 years now. Quite a song, I'm sure Baron B can attest to that.
